Getting a new tattoo let alone your first tattoo is normally an irreplaceable and unforgettable memory. For this reason, along with many others, it is generally recommended not to consume any alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours before getting your tattoo done.
There are many major issues associated with drinking before getting a tattoo, these include:
1. Blood Thinning Effect
Most people are not unaware of the fact that alcohol acts as a temporary blood thinner once consumed. This varies in effectiveness depending on how much is consumed but you should be aware that even small amounts may be enough to cause a change in your blood consistency.

Due to the blood being thinner it is now possible for more blood to flow through the tiny puncture wounds made by the tattooing needle. This blood thinning could cause heavy/ continuous bleeding as well as various other issues. This makes it extremely difficult for even the greatest tattoo artist with the best tattoo machines to maintain their usual quality standards in a timely manner.
This effect alone is more than enough to ruin what would normally be an unforgettable memory making it into a memory you wish you could forget but can’t.
2. Appearance
Drinking before getting a tattoo can have a huge impact on the quality of work done. This drop in quality is due to the excess blood now able to exit and cover the skin forcing the tattoo artist having to constantly wipe away blood disrupting their focus and interfering with the precise work they are trying to do. Often this leads to the customer being sent home and told to come back later as to ensure the best quality.
More blood is present in the areas being tattooed often leads to ink diluting. This occurs when excess blood mixes with the ink diluting it and leading to a faded appearance.
Heavy/continuous bleeding could also wash out the recently tattooed ink adding to the faded look and producing a patchy/inconsistent tattoo.
3. Poor Judgement
As adults I am sure we all have made decisions we regret or have a fun and wild story of when we were drunk. However, getting a tattoo should not be one of those drunk and wild stories that we often regret. This should come as no surprise; people do not make the best decisions when they drink or are under the influence of drugs/other harmful substances.
It is strongly recommended to never get a tattoo while you are drunk or impaired. Imagine getting an awesome new tattoo, then going home feeling as excited as a puppy with a new toy only to wake up and see that what you got was far from what you imagined, saw and approved the night before.
4. Legal Issues
Most tattoo parlours will instantly deny service if you are suspected of being drunk or impaired. This is because tattooing these impaired individuals often times could bring about legal issues, not just for the parlour but also for the artist.
This act of working on impaired individuals can be viewed as negligent behaviour causing damage to both the reputation and the credibility of the business and the artist.
Some states also disregard the contracts and papers of consent signed before this tattoo as “invalid” because the person signing was intoxicated or impaired.
5. Impaired Vision
As one can imagine it is in your best interest to not be drunk nor experiencing any visual abnormalities when getting a new tattoo. The main reason for this is that you are also required to:
- Approve that the tattoo you described to your artist is designed exactly as you wish.
- Approve that the stencil is applied to the correct location you want it.
- Make sure the size is to your liking.
All the above require your complete visual capabilities so you are not stuck with a permanent regret.
6. After Getting Your New Tattoo
After getting a new tattoo it is recommended not to drink for a minimum of 48 hours. Reason being you are basically walking around an open wound which would take longer to heal if alcohol is introduced to the mix. This is due to the blood thinning mentioned earlier which would disrupt the blood clotting and gathering of platelets ultimately impeding the scabbing required for the healing process to be completed.
This opens you up to a variety of other problems such as a higher chance of getting an infection in this open wound which is unprotected from harmful bacteria.
Drinking Alcohol and possible getting wasted during the first 48 hours can bring many other issues such as damaging the tattooed area. Imagine getting a deep and meaningful tattoo you love then going out getting wasted and tripping all over the place, only to awake the next day and see that half of your tattoo has been scraped away.
7. Other Substances to Avoid
Other substances to avoid include coffee, caffeinated drinks, energy drinks and various soft drinks. These should be avoided because they also act as blood thinners and have the same affect as alcohol.
Medication to be avoided include aspirin and ibuprofen these also work as blood thinners.
The recommended medication when getting a tattoo is Tylenol which when taken before has been proven to help reduce pain both during and after getting your new tattoo.
Conclusion
If you plan on getting a tattoo it is highly recommended that you do not consume alcohol at least 24 hours before and 48 hours after you have gotten your tattoo. Both your experience and your tattoo will be better for it!
