Built in 1068 by William the Conqueror, Warwick Castle is another old castle that you can visit. It is located in Warwickshire, England. Several additions were added over the next 100 years. For several centuries, the castle was left in disarray, badly damaged due to fire, storms, and enemy attacks. It was only during the 17th century when the castle saw improvements and major repairs.
5. Windsor Castle
Home to 10 monarchs, the Windsor Castle is the most popular castle on this list. Built in 1070, this castle is one of the oldest castles in the world that is still occupied to this day. It has been the home of reigning monarchs of England since King Henry I. During the succession of monarchs, the castle underwent several changes: with additions of grand palaces within the existing structures. Queen Elizabeth II often spends time at the castle.
6. Hohensalzbug Castle
Hohensalzburg Castle was built by Gebhard I in 1077. Located in Salzburg, Austria, this castle is considered one of the country’s most iconic castles. Over the next 500 years from the time of its construction, the castle saw several changes. Although the castle was damaged during the German Peasants’ War in 1525, it was immediately repaired and restored to its original grandeur.
7. Rochester Castle
Rochester Castle was built in the 1080s, upon the request of William II. Located in Kent, England, the castle was built from stone, rather than the motte and bailey type common at the time. It is currently supervised by the English Heritage and is open for public tours.
8. Alcazar of Spain
Built on the remains of a Roman fort, Alcazar of Spain was originally an Arab Fortress. When the Spanish city was reconquered by King Alfonso VI, the castle was mostly destroyed.
